Please take time to read about a remarkable and inspirational project.
EASTWOOD SCHOOL OLYMPIC JOURNEY
The Eastwood School in Leigh on Sea is a specialist sports college and the hub for the school partnership for Southend-on-Sea West. It is also recognised locally, regionally and nationally for its performance and major achievements within a wide range of sporting areas. Last year this remarkable school embarked on an exciting journey to build an arena that will see a FIFA football pitch surrounded by a MONDO athletics track - the same surface that USAIN BOLT set all his records on! Eastwood will be the only school in the UK with such a facility.
From this facility Eastwood School aim to host OLYMPIC 2012 training camps and because of the Mondo surface the school is fully engaging with Paralympic athletes too. Delegates from several countries including Sri Lanka, France and the Maldives have already held talks with the school and as the project progresses many top athletes have given their support. Household names such as DAME KELLY HOLMES, SIR STEVE REDGRAVE, SIR CHRIS HOY, JESSICA ENNIS, USAIN BOLT, SALLY GUNNELL, RONNIE O'SULLIVAN, BETH TWEDDLE, MO FARAH & TOM DALEY and many more are backing this fantastic project. More support comes from football clubs such as Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham Utd and Southend Utd. The list is constantly growing!
VISION AND BENEFITS FOR THE FUTURE
Deputy Head Teacher and Sports Direct Scott Maclean says "The scheme includes a six lane running track, facilities for long and triple jump, shotput, pole vault, hammer and discus, plus a fully drained FIFA football pitch in the middle. The project stands alongside stadiums such as Beijing and if kept, the London 2012 stadium in Stratford. We want our facilities to be used by the community and elite athletes and we believe this track can hold a legacy for all".
Southend West MP David Amess helped develop the plans and is a staunch supporter of this ambitious enterprise and recently stated "This facility is world class and not only puts Eastwood School on the sporting map but will engage with the local, regional and international community".
This dynamic project will change the sporting landscape of the Southend district, providing people of all ages and abilities with facilities that compete with major international sporting organisations. Fund raising events and sponsorships have been ongoing for some while and local businesses have amazing opportunities to get involved in many ways.
